Thank you for being here, I am happy you will learn a little bit more about this type of diet.
For starters, this is not a weight-loss related diet. This is a diet the is focused on improving several GI symptoms that tend to be really uncomfortable and that can even deteriorate someone's quality of life.
What GI symptoms are common? abdominal pain, excessive gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation or a combination of both.
So, what does FODMAP stands for? It stands for:
F: fermentable
O: oligosaccharides
D: disaccharides
M: monosaccharides
A: and
P: polyols
It may not ring a bell when I mention these names above but if you dig deeper and go to your high school biology class, you may recall these names. These are all types of carbohydrates. There are carbohydrates that can easily be fermented in the colon while others do not or partially get fermented.
What this diet will try to do, will be reduce the problematic symptoms caused by the consumption of these types of carbohydrates.
I do want to clarify and say that as these carbohydrates tend to cause some discomfort

it does not mean they are bad for you and you should avoid them. Some people tend to experience worst symptoms than others while consuming these carbohydrates and this is when great guidance from a dietitian comes to play. There is not "one size fits all" when it comes to this diet since people tend to tolerate some better than others.
This is the list of carbohydrates that you can be in the look out for as they ferment easily in the colon:
Garlic
Onions
Asparagus
Beans (black, kidney, lima, soya)
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Mange tout
Mushrooms
Peas
Scallions/Spring onions
Apples
Apricot
Avocados
Ripe Bananas
Blackberries
Grapefruit
Mango
Peaches
Pears
Plums
Raisins
Sultanas
Watermelon
